The plant often develops long arching shoots, which enhances its elegance\u2014especially when it overhangs a path, border, or water feature.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1456\" data-end=\"1468\">Colours<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1470\" data-end=\"1748\">\n<li data-start=\"1470\" data-end=\"1568\">\n<p data-start=\"1472\" data-end=\"1568\"><strong data-start=\"1472\" data-end=\"1485\">Spring<\/strong> : brown-red to purple foliage (often most intense early in the season).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1569\" data-end=\"1643\">\n<p data-start=\"1571\" data-end=\"1643\"><strong data-start=\"1571\" data-end=\"1578\">Summer<\/strong> : shifts toward purple-green \/ deep purple tones.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1644\" data-end=\"1748\">\n<p data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1748\"><strong data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1669\">Late summer \u2013 autumn<\/strong> : the color may \u201cclose down\u201d to a brownish purple-green depending on exposure and soil.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"1750\" data-end=\"1768\">Habit &amp; vigour<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1770\" data-end=\"1982\">Small-tree habit (or large shrub depending on training), with arching branches. Low vigor: this is a cultivar for patient gardeners, valued for its unique foliage rather than fast results.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1984\" data-end=\"2010\">Indicative size<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2012\" data-end=\"2068\">Observed orders of magnitude depending on sources and training:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2070\" data-end=\"2338\">\n<li data-start=\"2070\" data-end=\"2119\">\n<p data-start=\"2072\" data-end=\"2119\">around 2 m at about 10 years (often cited),<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2120\" data-end=\"2180\">\n<p data-start=\"2122\" data-end=\"2180\">an observed ~20-year-old specimen around 2.5 m,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2181\" data-end=\"2338\">\n<p data-start=\"2183\" data-end=\"2338\">in the very long term it can exceed these figures, but growth remains very slow (large variation with climate, soil, grafting, and pruning).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"2340\" data-end=\"2354\">Exposure<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2356\" data-end=\"2560\">Sun \/ bright partial shade. In hot climates or drying soils, choose a sheltered position and soil that stays cool in summer. Avoid scorching exposures and drying winds.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2864\" data-end=\"2886\">Origin &amp; history<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2888\" data-end=\"3394\">\u2018Ansorgei\u2019 is generally presented as a very slow selection with narrow, lance-shaped leaves, often thought to originate from (or be close to) a presumed cross between a purple beech and a cut-leaved form. It is attributed to Ansorge and reported as raised at the Flottbeck nurseries (Hamburg) in 1891.<br data-start=\"3227\" data-end=\"3230\" \/>It is also listed as Fagus sylvatica var. heterophylla (Atropurpurea Group) \u2018Ansorgei\u2019; RHS treats Fagus sylvatica \u2018Ansorgei\u2019 as a synonym.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"668\" data-end=\"1055\">\u2018Ansorgei\u2019 is a rare European beech, remarkable for its long, fine, narrow leaves, often described as \u201cwillow-leaved\u201d.
