It has strong presence all season long, without relying solely on autumn colour.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1296\" data-end=\"1308\">Colours<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1310\" data-end=\"1637\">\n<li data-start=\"1310\" data-end=\"1414\">\n<p data-start=\"1312\" data-end=\"1414\"><strong>Spring<\/strong> : brick red to deep red (often very rich), with veins already lighter.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1415\" data-end=\"1544\">\n<p data-start=\"1417\" data-end=\"1544\"><strong>Summer<\/strong> : chocolate brown \/ purplish brown to very dark purple; the contrast with the green veins often remains visible.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1545\" data-end=\"1637\">\n<p data-start=\"1547\" data-end=\"1637\"><strong>Autumn<\/strong> : orange to scarlet red (sometimes with warmer nuances depending on conditions).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"1639\" data-end=\"1657\">Habit &amp; vigour<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1659\" data-end=\"1860\">Rather upright, then spreading, forming a well-structured small tree\/shrub. Moderate vigour; it can stay compact in a pot, while becoming a fine specimen in the ground over the years.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1862\" data-end=\"1888\">Indicative size<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1890\" data-end=\"1946\">Observed orders of magnitude depending on sources and training:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1948\" data-end=\"2164\">\n<li data-start=\"1948\" data-end=\"1997\">\n<p data-start=\"1950\" data-end=\"1997\">around 3.5 m at 10 years is sometimes indicated,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1998\" data-end=\"2092\">\n<p data-start=\"2000\" data-end=\"2092\">many descriptions place it around 2 to 4 m at maturity (variable),<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2093\" data-end=\"2164\">\n<p data-start=\"2095\" data-end=\"2164\">the spread can become close to the height on a well-established plant.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"2166\" data-end=\"2180\">Exposure<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2182\" data-end=\"2480\">Gentle sun \/ bright partial shade.<br data-start=\"2219\" data-end=\"2222\" \/>In non-scorching sun, the shade can become darker\/blackish; in bright partial shade, the foliage often keeps a more chocolate tone and better summer quality.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2825\" data-end=\"2847\">Origin &amp; history<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2849\" data-end=\"3236\">\u2018Tsukushi gata\u2019 is often presented as an old Japanese cultivar, cited in some lists as existing before 1900.
