It adds height and colour without taking up much width. With age, the plant may broaden slightly, while keeping its slender character.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1026\">Colours<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1028\" data-end=\"1227\">\n<li data-start=\"1028\" data-end=\"1076\">\n<p data-start=\"1030\" data-end=\"1076\"><strong>Spring<\/strong> : young leaves bright red.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1077\" data-end=\"1176\">\n<p data-start=\"1079\" data-end=\"1176\"><strong>Summer<\/strong> : purplish red to dark red (sometimes a little more red-green depending on conditions).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1177\" data-end=\"1227\">\n<p data-start=\"1179\" data-end=\"1227\"><strong>Autumn<\/strong> : red (often very luminous).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"1229\" data-end=\"1247\">Habit &amp; vigour<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1249\" data-end=\"1491\">Strongly fastigiate\/columnar habit, dense growth. Vigour is described as moderate to good: it can remain compact, but in the ground and in good conditions, it gains height faster than you might expect.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1493\" data-end=\"1519\">Indicative size<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1521\" data-end=\"1805\">Order of magnitude: 2.5 to 4 m ultimately, with width generally kept under control (often around 1\u20132 m depending on training and conditions). Some growers report that in the ground it can grow faster and exceed the \u201cdwarf\u201d sizes often announced.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1807\" data-end=\"1830\">Exposure<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1832\" data-end=\"2066\">Gentle sun \/ bright partial shade. Light enhances the colour, but protection from scorching sun and dry winds improves foliage quality, especially in a container.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2363\" data-end=\"2398\">Origin &amp; history<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2400\" data-end=\"2638\">\u2018Twombly\u2019s Red Sentinel\u2019 is attributed to Ken Twombly (Connecticut, USA).
