It is often compared to \u2018Okushimo\u2019 for leaf shape, but it is generally described as smaller and denser, with tight branching.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1141\" data-end=\"1163\">Colours<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1165\" data-end=\"1514\">\n<li data-start=\"1165\" data-end=\"1286\">\n<p data-start=\"1167\" data-end=\"1286\"><strong>Spring<\/strong> : soft green to green, sometimes with a slightly coppery tint on young growth depending on conditions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1287\" data-end=\"1402\">\n<p data-start=\"1289\" data-end=\"1402\"><strong>Summer<\/strong> : dark green; leaf edges often very tightly rolled (most marked in hot periods).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1403\" data-end=\"1514\">\n<p data-start=\"1405\" data-end=\"1514\"><strong>Autumn<\/strong> : golden yellow to orange, sometimes orange-red or red depending on exposure and the year.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"1516\" data-end=\"1534\">Habit &amp; vigour<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1536\" data-end=\"1672\">Upright and compact habit, with a tendency to form a very dense mass (short internodes). Slow to moderate growth.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1674\" data-end=\"1700\">Indicative size<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1702\" data-end=\"1948\">Order of magnitude: often around 1.5 to 2 m (and more) depending on training and conditions. Some indications give ~1.5 m at around 10 years, others a little more; in the ground it can develop into a small tree of 2\u20133 m (variable).<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1950\" data-end=\"1973\">Exposure<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1975\" data-end=\"2205\">Bright partial shade or gentle sun. Good light highlights the foliage structure and autumn colours, but protection from scorching sun and drying winds improves leaf quality, especially in containers.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2428\" data-end=\"2463\">Origin &amp; history<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2465\" data-end=\"2753\">Several sources indicate an old Japanese cultivar, sometimes stated as present before 1882.
