Shiro fu nishiki
‘Shiro fu nishiki’ is a Japanese maple with yellow-speckled foliage, very bright in the garden as well as in a pot. In spring, the leaves are often yellow-green, then in summer the yellow variegation shows best, especially on new growth. In autumn, the plant finishes with lovely yellow-orange tones. A premium choice to add light and fine detail to a collection.
Character & interest
‘Shiro fu nishiki’ appeals with its “constellation” effect: a light green base dotted with yellow, sometimes more marked on the newest leaves. It’s a cultivar best appreciated up close—ideal for creating a refined focal point, without an overly heavy variegation. It looks particularly elegant paired with purple-leaved maples or solid greens.
Colours
-
Spring : yellow-green / light green (bright look).
-
Summer : green foliage with yellow speckling, often yellower on new growth.
-
Autumn : yellow-orange to soft orange.
Habit & vigour
Rather upright habit, with a silhouette that can remain taller than wide. Moderate vigour.
Indicative size
Observed orders of magnitude depending on sources and training:
-
often 2 to 3 m,
-
some catalogues give 2 to 4 m at maturity,
-
spread generally around 1 to 1.5 m (variable with pruning and position).
Exposure
Bright partial shade recommended, or gentle (morning) sun in a temperate climate. Like many light/variegated foliages, a sheltered position (dry winds, scorching sun) helps keep the leaves clean.
