Seiryu

‘Seiryū’ is a Japanese maple with finely cut foliage (dissectum type) and a rare feature: an upright / columnar habit rather than a weeping one. Its foliage is light green in spring, turns green in summer, then develops magnificent yellow to golden tones in autumn (sometimes with orange nuances). An elegant cultivar, very useful for adding light vertical structure in a container or in the garden.

Character & interest

‘Seiryū’ combines the very fine texture of a dissectum with a vertical silhouette. This creates a “lace” effect without taking up too much width—valuable in small gardens, containers, or Japanese-style scenes. Branching can become dense over time while keeping an airy look.

Colours

  • Spring : light green foliage, sometimes with slightly reddish tips on the very young leaves.

  • Summer : deeper green.

  • Autumn : yellow to gold, often very bright, sometimes orange depending on conditions.

Habit & vigour

Upright habit. Moderate to good vigour.

Indicative size

Order of magnitude: around 3 m at 10 years in several catalogues, with a potential around 4 m in the long run (variable with conditions and training). The spread generally remains more contained than that of many broad-spreading Japanese maples.

Exposure

Gentle sun / bright partial shade. Protection from cold winds and scorching sun improves the hold of the fine foliage, especially in a container.
