Scolopendrifolium
‘Scolopendrifolium’ is a Japanese maple with very original foliage, made up of long, very narrow lobes that create a light, almost “bamboo-like” effect. Its habit is upright and supple, and the foliage stays green all summer before turning yellow to yellow-orange in autumn (sometimes with coppery nuances depending on exposure). An excellent variety to bring a different texture, in a container or in the garden.
Character & interest
The main appeal of ‘Scolopendrifolium’ is its texture: leaves deeply cut into 5 very fine lobes (often described as straps) that move easily in the wind and create an airy look. It is a very elegant alternative to dissectums, with a fine leaf but a different overall reading.
Colours
-
Spring : green foliage, sometimes with reddish petioles; some catalogues mention orange tones on the very young growth.
-
Summer : clear green to deep green (stable appearance).
-
Autumn : yellow to yellow-orange; depending on conditions it can lean apricot/orange, sometimes with a touch of copper.
Habit & vigour
Upright habit, rather open and supple; moderate to good growth (often more vigorous than other very narrow-lobed forms).
Indicative size
As a guide: often around 3 to 4 m in the long run (sometimes more depending on conditions). Several references give about 3.5–4 m tall, with a spread around 2.5–3 m.
Exposure
Bright partial shade or gentle sun. Light enhances the yellow-orange autumn colour, but very hot, windy or dry situations can cause scorch and reduce foliage quality.
