Samidare
‘Samidare’ is a vigorous Japanese maple with large leaves, highly valued for its bright autumn colour. In spring, the young leaves often appear almost pink, then quickly turn green for summer. Late in the season, the tree colours from yellow to yellow-orange. An excellent choice for a garden where you want an elegant green maple… with a real surprise in autumn.
Character & interest
‘Samidare’ is one of those green-leaved cultivars that structure the garden all season long, then truly reveals itself in autumn. Its foliage is larger than the average Acer palmatum, giving it a “full”, highly readable presence. In good conditions, autumn can show subtle mixes of gold, crimson and purple, sometimes in contrasting patterns.
Colours
-
Spring : young leaves often pinkish, then quickly green; sometimes with fine reddish margins.
-
Summer : green to deep green.
-
Autumn : yellow to yellow-orange; sometimes mixed with purplish-red nuances (a “stained-glass” effect depending on the plant and conditions).
Habit & vigour
Upright, natural habit, with good vigour. It can become a small tree of a fine size.
Indicative size
Order of magnitude: about 3.5 m at 10 years in some cultivation conditions, and often 5 to 6 m ultimately in the garden, with a substantial spread if the tree is left unpruned.
Exposure
Gentle sun / bright partial shade. Light enhances autumn colouring, while avoiding scorching sun and dry wind (especially in a hot climate or in a container).
