Red dragon
‘Red Dragon’ is a laceleaf Japanese maple (dissectum) with a compact, cascading habit, valued for its ability to keep a dark red colour for a very long time during the season. In spring, the foliage starts scarlet/bright red, then deepens to a rich burgundy in summer, before turning a blazing red in autumn. An excellent choice for a container or a small garden if you want a reliable red cascade.
Character & interest
‘Red Dragon’ combines two qualities that are highly sought after in red dissectums:
-
a naturally cascading silhouette (dense and well branched),
-
very long-lasting colour: the red does not “drop out” easily in summer, especially in a sheltered position and in soil that stays cool.
Colours
-
Spring : bright red / scarlet on young leaves.
-
Summer : burgundy / deep purple (often well maintained).
-
Autumn : scarlet red to fiery red.
Habit & vigour
Spreading, weeping habit, forming a mound / cascade. Slow to moderate growth.
Indicative size
Order of magnitude: about 1.5 to 2.5 m ultimately, often with a similar spread. At 10 years, it is often around 1.5 to 2 m depending on conditions and training.
Exposure
Bright partial shade or gentle sun. The finely cut foliage appreciates protection from scorching sun and dry winds, especially in a container.
Origin & history
The cultivar is often described as a New Zealand selection, introduced to the United States around 1990.
