Pendulum julian
‘Pendulum Julian’ is a laceleaf Japanese maple with a weeping habit, forming a beautiful, cushion-like mound. In spring, the foliage starts a rich purplish red, then shifts in summer towards bronze-green tones (often with a slightly green-veined look), before a very luminous autumn display in yellow, orange and red. An elegant cultivar, ideal in a container as well as in a small garden.
Character & interest
‘Pendulum Julian’ stands out for its naturally cascading silhouette—more “cushion” than “umbrella”: the branches drape to form a supple, dense mass. The finely cut foliage is sometimes described as slightly less filigree than some very fine dissectums, which gives it a slightly fuller, more readable look.
Colours
-
Spring : purplish red (often very rich).
-
Summer : bronze to bronze-green, sometimes with a green-veined effect.
-
Autumn : yellow, orange and red (often highly decorative).
Habit & vigour
Weeping habit, forming a mound/cushion, with slow to moderate growth.
Indicative size
As a guide: often around 1.5 m tall for 2 m wide at maturity (cushion form). Depending on training (staking / graft height), the overall look and perceived height can vary.
Exposure
Bright partial shade or gentle sun. Protection from scorching sun and dry winds improves the hold of the fine foliage, especially in a container.
Origine & histoire (collection)
Several horticultural sources indicate the cultivar is recorded around 1935, and it is often presented as introduced to the USA by Henry Hohman (Kingsville Nursery, Maryland) after import from Yokohama Nursery (Japan).
