Osakazuki
‘Ōsakazuki’ is a Japanese maple renowned for its exceptional autumn red, often cited among the most intense. In spring, the foliage emerges light green (sometimes with slightly browned tips), becomes dark green in summer, then the tree transforms at season’s end into a striking scarlet-orange / vivid red. A cultivar with real presence, ideal in the garden and also very well suited to a large container.
Character & interest
‘Ōsakazuki’ is a great classic for one simple reason: it offers an autumn reliability and intensity that are rarely matched. The foliage is relatively large and not very dissected (amoenum style), giving a “full”, orderly look. It becomes truly superb with a bit of age, developing a broad, balanced silhouette.
Colours
-
Spring : fresh green foliage, sometimes with slightly browned tips on young leaves.
-
Summer : darker green foliage.
-
Autumn : shifts to scarlet-orange, then vivid red (signature colour).
Habit & vigour
Large shrub / small tree with a rounded habit, moderate to good growth. It can become quite broad when planted in the ground.
Indicative size
As a guide: often around 4 to 5 m ultimately (sometimes more in good conditions), with a substantial spread. In a container, growth stays more contained but requires a generous pot.
Exposure
Bright partial shade or gentle sun. Light enhances autumn colour, but protection from scorching sun and drying winds is helpful, especially in a container.
