Oridono nishiki
‘Oridono nishiki’ is a very refined variegated Japanese maple: the foliage mixes green, pink and white, with an effect that is often most spectacular in summer. The plant forms a rather upright, dense subject, and its young shoots can be red to pinkish (sometimes striped). In autumn, the foliage often goes through a luminous golden stage before deeper red tones. A collector cultivar, superb in a container and in a small garden.
Character & interest
‘Oridono nishiki’ stands out for its changing variegation: some leaves emerge more tender green, then gradually become marked with pink and white, sometimes as speckling or irregular patches. The effect is very graphic, and each shoot can have its own “pattern”, which makes the cultivar especially lively.
Growing tip (general for variegated cultivars): if a branch comes out completely green (without variegation), it can be removed to preserve the variegated look.
Colours
-
Spring : a mix of soft green with lighter nuances; variegation may still be discreet at first.
-
Summer : pink and white variegation is often more pronounced (very decorative).
-
Autumn : turns golden, then red (sometimes deep red / wine-coloured depending on conditions).
Habit & vigour
Rather upright, dense habit. Moderate to good vigour.
Indicative size
Order of magnitude: around 2 m at about 10 years in several catalogues, with a potential of 3–6 m in the ground depending on conditions and training. In a container, growth remains more contained.
Exposure
Bright partial shade is recommended, or gentle sun. The pale areas (white/pink) appreciate protection from scorching sun (especially in the afternoon) and dry wind. Free-draining, humus-rich soil that stays cool in summer.
