Oregon sunset
‘Oregon Sunset’ is a compact, bushy Japanese maple: the leaves start deep red in spring, shift to plum/olive tones in summer, then take on a very bright orange-red colour in autumn. A small-growing cultivar, ideal for containers and small gardens.
Character & interest
‘Oregon Sunset’ stands out for its colour transitions (not just a uniform red). The foliage is dense and well-shaped, with lobes that can be slightly drooping at the tips, adding an elegant touch to the silhouette. A very good choice to bring contrast without taking up too much space.
Colours
-
Spring : red to deep red foliage.
-
Summer : shifts to olive and plum tones (often darker).
-
Autumn : orange-red to scarlet red (often very bright).
Habit & vigour
Upright at first, then more spreading with age while remaining compact. Rather moderate vigour, with growth often described as slow but steady.
Indicative size
Order of magnitude: around 1.5 to 2 m tall, for 2 to 3 m wide depending on conditions and training. (In a container, growth remains more restrained.)
Exposure
Gentle sun / bright partial shade. Light enhances the colours, but protection from scorching sun and dry wind improves foliage quality, especially in a container.
