Orangeola
‘Orangeola’ is a laceleaf Japanese maple with a very elegant weeping habit, appreciated for its colour range throughout the season: bright orange-red in spring, then a nuanced deep red in summer, often with a fresher, more orange flush of new growth later on. Autumn is reputed to be very late—often among the last dissectums to colour—shifting to red and orange tones. A remarkable cultivar for containers as well as small gardens.
Character & interest
‘Orangeola’ combines a cascading silhouette with evolving colour. Its special feature is that it keeps its interest for a long time: contrast between darker mature foliage and warmer young growth, then an end of season that is often spectacular and late. On young plants, some branches can elongate and develop in a sinuous way, enhancing the architectural character.
Colours
-
Spring : very luminous orange-red foliage.
-
Summer : deep red foliage (often nuanced), frequently with a second wave of more orange leaves.
-
Autumn : red and orange, with colouring often very late.
Habit & vigour
Weeping habit (cascade), generally taller than wide compared with many dissectums. Moderate, steady vigour.
Indicative size
Order of magnitude: around 2.5 m in many growing situations (often quoted at 10 years), and about 2 to 3 m (sometimes a little more) at maturity depending on conditions and training. In a container, growth remains more restrained.
Exposure
Bright partial shade or gentle sun. Good light enhances the colours, but protection from scorching sun and drying wind improves foliage quality, especially in a container.
Origin & history
‘Orangeola’ is a selection introduced by Esveld nursery (Netherlands) in 1988. The cultivar received an Award of Merit in Boskoop (1995) and an RHS Award of Garden Merit.
