Okushimo
‘Okushimo’ is a very graphic Japanese maple: its green leaves, often 5-lobed, have margins that curl upward, giving them an almost sculpted look and a unique texture. The habit is upright (often vase-shaped), and autumn brings yellow to orange tones, sometimes shifting to orange-red depending on conditions. An original cultivar, ideal in a pot as well as in the garden.
Character & interest
The main appeal of ‘Okushimo’ is its texture: the lobes—and especially their margins—curl upward, creating a raised, sculpted leaf that stays interesting all season. This foliage shape gives a very architectural presence, even from a distance.
Colours
-
Spring : fresh green foliage (often very crisp).
-
Summer : green to dark green, with the margins still strongly rolled (an effect often enhanced by heat).
-
Autumn : yellow to orange, sometimes orange-red or red
Habit & vigour
Upright, structured habit, often described as vase-shaped (width mainly in the upper part). Moderate to good vigour.
Indicative size
As a guide: around 1.5–2 m at about 10 years in some cultivation conditions, but other sources give a larger development. Ultimately it can form a small tree of about 4 to 6 m (or more in favourable conditions). Variable depending on climate, soil, graft and training.
Exposure
Gentle sun / bright partial shade. Good light highlights the texture and autumn colours. In a hot climate or in a container, protection from scorching sun and dry wind reduces stress and improves foliage quality.
