O izu
‘O izu’ is an elegant Japanese maple, recognisable by its soft green foliage whose lobe margins are very finely cut (a highly decorative “serrated / tight-toothed” effect). In summer it becomes green, then in autumn it turns yellow-orange. Its habit is upright and natural. A luminous cultivar, ideal for containers as well as a small garden.
Character & interest
The main appeal of ‘O izu’ is the texture of the leaf edge: the blade remains palmate, but the margin is finely worked, giving a more refined look than a classic green maple. It truly shines in bright partial shade, where the foliage keeps a crisp, fresh appearance.
Colours
-
Spring : soft green (often very fresh).
-
Summer : green.
-
Autumn : yellow to orange (often yellow-orange).
Habit & vigour
Upright habit, natural silhouette. Moderate to good vigour.
Indicative size
As a guide: information varies widely depending on sources and how the plant is trained. You may find estimates around 1–1.5 m at about 10 years in compact cultivation, but also around 2.5 m at 10 years on less restricted plants. At maturity, it is often given at around 3 to 5 m tall (and 3 to 4 m wide) when planted in the ground.
Exposure
Bright partial shade or gentle sun. It can tolerate full sun if the soil remains free-draining but cool in summer. Protecting it from drying winds improves foliage quality, especially in a container.
