Naniwa beni
‘Naniwa beni’ is a Japanese maple appreciated for its raspberry-red to bright red spring flush, very decorative, then for its green foliage highlighted by red new growth in summer. In autumn, it returns to a dark red. Its habit is upright and flaring, making it a very interesting cultivar for containers or a small garden.
Character & interest
‘Naniwa beni’ stands out for a very colourful start to the season, then for a second “reading” in summer thanks to red new growth against a green background. It’s a cultivar that brings rhythm without being “monochrome” all year long.
Colours
-
Spring : raspberry red / bright red (depending on exposure, the shade may lean towards coral/pink).
-
Summer : green foliage, with red new growth.
-
Autumn : dark red (sometimes deep red).
Habit & vigour
Upright habit, then flaring; a slender, open silhouette. Moderate to good vigour.
Indicative size
Order of magnitude: often around 2 to 3 m at maturity, for about 2 m spread (variable depending on conditions and training). In a container, growth remains more restrained.
Exposure
Gentle sun / bright partial shade. It can tolerate full sun if the soil remains free-draining but cool in summer. Protection from drying winds improves foliage quality.
