Muro gawa
‘Muro gawa’ is a Japanese maple with spectacular, ever-changing foliage: in spring, the young leaves often emerge orange-red to deep pink, with clearly visible green veins; summer then moves through rusty-green to bronze-green tones. In autumn, it colours orange, red, then crimson. Its habit becomes rounded with slightly drooping outer branches, and the yellow-green bark adds winter interest. A beautiful subject for containers as well as for the garden.
Character & interest
‘Muro gawa’ is a “transition” cultivar: it is precisely the succession of colours (and the vein contrast in spring) that makes its charm. Even in winter, the yellow-green tone of the twigs can remain decorative, especially on a plant well exposed to light.
Colours
-
Spring : orange-red / deep pink with contrasting green veins.
-
Summer : shifting to rusty green, then a darker bronze-green towards late summer.
-
Autumn : orange, then red and crimson.
Habit & vigour
Moderate to good vigour. Upright at first, then rounded with age, with outer branches sometimes gracefully drooping.
Indicative size
Order of magnitude: about 3 to 6 m ultimately depending on sources and conditions, with a spread often between 3 and 4 m. In a container, growth remains more restrained.
Exposure
Gentle sun / bright partial shade. Good light enhances the colours, but protection from scorching sun and dry wind (especially in a container) improves foliage quality.
