Mikazuki

Character & interest

‘Mikazuki’ is among the most sought-after “veined” maples: the graphic effect comes from the contrast between a pale blade and the network of veins. The colour often remains attractive through the season compared with other reticulated cultivars, especially if exposure avoids hot afternoon sun.

Colours

• Spring : pink to pink-red foliage, strongly reticulated (contrasting veins, sometimes darker).

• Summer : lighter foliage (pale green, sometimes cream/greenish) with veins that remain very visible.

• Autumn : orange to orange-yellow (often with the veins still readable).

Habit & vigour

Upright and rather bushy habit, moderate growth. The silhouette generally stays well balanced and is easy to grow in a container.

Indicative size

Order of magnitude: around 2 to 3 m (depending on conditions), with a spread that is often a bit more contained. In a pot, growth remains more limited.

Exposure

Bright partial shade or gentle sun. Protection from hot afternoon sun is recommended to prolong the quality of the spring foliage and to limit scorching on the pale areas.

Origin & history

Several sources indicate that ‘Mikazuki’ was discovered and introduced by Talon Buchholz via the Flora Wonder collection (Buchholz Nursery, Oregon – USA).
The name ‘Mikazuki’ is generally translated as “crescent moon”.
