Karasu gawa

‘Karasu gawa’ is sought after for its bright, changeable variegation: some leaves can emerge almost entirely pink, then become nuanced with white and green as the season progresses. The contrast is often most spectacular on young growth. Another, more discreet but real advantage is its coral shoots in the cold season, which are appreciated when the garden is at rest.

Colours

• Spring : young leaves can be vivid pink, then pale pink/white with green (variegation varies).

• Summer : foliage generally becomes greener, with bleached areas and pinkish new growth.

• Autumn : often red to red-orange (depending on conditions).

• Winter : decorative coral shoots.

Rather bushy to upright habit, moderate vigour (often described as a small grower). Variegation can vary with vigour and exposure.

Indicative size

Order of magnitude: around 1.5 to 2 m in the most “compact” descriptions, but some sources indicate a potential of around 3 m (or a little more) with age in the ground. Considerable variability depending on conditions and training.

Exposure

Bright partial shade is recommended, or gentle sun (morning). In hot, dry climates, protection from drying winds and scorching sun helps limit leaf scorch on variegated foliage.

Origin & history

Despite its Japanese name, a specialised source indicates (based on Book for Maples by Masayoshi Yano) that ‘Karasu gawa’ may originate from Oregon (USA).
