Geisha gone wild

‘Geisha Gone Wild’ is a spectacular variegated Japanese maple, with irregular leaves mixing bright pink, purple, cream/white and green. Highly decorative in spring, it often keeps a colourful look through the season and finishes with warm pink to violet autumn tones, sometimes orange-purple depending on conditions. A selection known to be more vigorous and more stable than ‘Geisha’, ideal for containers and small gardens.

Character & interest

This is a spectacular cultivar: the foliage combines several colours on the same plant, with leaves that can be crinkled, distorted or irregular, which enhances the “artistic” look. Colouration is generally most intense on young growth and in gentle light.

Colours

  • Spring : very high-contrast foliage, often pink/fuchsia + purple, with cream/white areas and some green.

  • Summer : tends to become greener, but often keeps pink/purple nuances on new growth.

  • Autumn : tones are often warm pink / magenta to violet, sometimes described as purple-orange depending on climate and exposure.

Habit & vigour

Rather vase-shaped / upright habit, with a small-tree silhouette. Moderate to good vigour (often described as stronger than ‘Geisha’).

Indicative size

As a guide: often around 2 to 2.5 m at about 10 years, with a spread often 1 to 2 m (variable). In the ground and under good conditions, some plants can exceed these values with age.

Exposure

Bright partial shade recommended. Morning sun with afternoon shade generally helps keep the spring pink/purple tones for longer. Avoid scorching sun and dry wind, especially in a container.

Origin & history

‘Geisha Gone Wild’ is described as a sport (mutation) from ‘Geisha’, selected by Talon Buchholz from ‘Geisha’ plants that tend to sport (notably on vigorous shoots). It is presented as a Flora Wonder / Buchholz Nursery (USA) introduction.
