Esk sunset

‘Esk Sunset’ is a rare sycamore maple grown for its constantly shifting variegated foliage and its purple leaf undersides. At budbreak, the variegation can be quite subtle: new leaves often emerge orange-pink / bronze, then the cream (and pink) marbling becomes clearer and stronger as the leaves expand. As the season progresses, the foliage turns deeper green, splashed and marbled with cream (often with lingering pink/tan tones), while the undersides develop a rich purple to reddish-purple. With backlighting or when the wind flips the leaves, this contrast can create a spectacular rosy glow through translucency.

Character & interest

A slow to moderate-growing small tree with long-season interest: warm spring flush, cream-variegated summer foliage with purple undersides, then yellow to orange fall color. The dark underside is a key feature, adding depth and boosting the pink effect when the leaves are backlit.

Colours

  • Spring : orange-pink / bronze; variegation often develops as leaves open.

  • Summer : deep green splashed/marbled with cream (often with some pink/tan); purple to reddish-purple undersides.

  • Autumn : bright yellow to orange.

Habit & vigour

Upright when young, becoming more spreading with age (balanced silhouette). Generally described as slow-growing, which helps it stay proportionate for a long time.

Indicative size

Depending on conditions and training:

  • around 3.5–4.5 m at about 20 years (sometimes more),

  • typical mature spread 3–5 m.

Exposure

Best in bright partial shade, especially in hot/dry climates. It can take gentle sun, but the pale variegation may scorch if exposed to harsh afternoon sun and drought. Prefer moist but well-drained soil.

Origin & history

‘Esk Sunset’ (often also found under the synonym ‘Eskimo Sunset’) was discovered in Napier, New Zealand, then introduced into cultivation by nurseryman John Mills. The name refers to the Esk Valley region around the Esk River.
