Elmwood

‘Elmwood’ is a very original Japanese maple from the reticulated variegates group: in spring, its leaves show a lime-green to pinkish/cream background crossed by very pronounced dark green veins, creating a particularly decorative “wood-grain” effect. In summer, the foliage becomes greener / moss-green, then autumn brings golden yellow to orange tones. Upright habit and restrained size: superb in a container as well as in a small garden.

Character & interest

‘Elmwood’ is sought after for its reticulated pattern (the contrast between the pale background and the dark veining), which gives the impression of a textured, ever-changing leaf. The effect is often most spectacular in spring and early summer, when several shades coexist on the same tree. Note: this cultivar is different from ‘Elmwood Spreader’ (a spreading/weeping dissectum). Here, this is an ‘Elmwood’ with a more upright habit and a reticulated effect.

Colours

  • Spring : lime / light-green background, often nuanced with pink or paler tones, with very visible dark green veins (reticulated effect).

  • Summer : greener to moss-green foliage; the reticulated effect may remain visible but is often more subtle.

  • Autumn : golden yellow to orange, sometimes amber.

Habit & vigour

Upright habit (small tree), rather vertical silhouette. Moderate vigour.

Indicative size

As a guide: about 2 to 2.5 m around 10 years, and often 2.5 to 3.5 m eventually depending on conditions (variable).

Exposure

Bright partial shade or gentle sun. Protection from scorching sun and dry wind helps keep the leaves clean (especially in a pot) and maintains the interest of the reticulated pattern.
