Deshojo
‘Deshojo’ is a Japanese maple renowned for its spectacular, vivid red budbreak in spring. The foliage then turns green in summer, before colouring again from red to red-orange in autumn. Upright, rounded habit with moderate vigour: a reliable classic, very attractive in a container as well as in a small garden, and often appreciated for bonsai.
Character & interest
‘Deshojo’ belongs to the “spectacular spring” maples: the first flush is particularly luminous (bright red), then the tree settles to green and keeps a fresh look all summer. It may also produce catch-up shoots during the season, sometimes redder, which maintains interest. The silhouette is naturally rounded and well balanced, easy to integrate.
Colours
-
Spring : young leaves bright red (often described as “coral/vermilion” depending on sources).
-
Summer : green foliage (from light green to deeper green depending on exposure).
-
Autumn : red to red-orange tones, often very decorative.
Habit & vigour
Upright, rounded habit (small tree / large shrub). Moderate, steady vigour.
Indicative size
Order of magnitude: about 2 to 3 m ultimately depending on conditions, often with a similar spread.
Exposure
Bright partial shade or gentle sun. Protection from scorching sun and drying winds improves foliage hold (especially in a container). Cultivar sensitive to powdery mildew; avoid overly humid situations.
Origin & history
Cultivar of Japanese origin, generally considered to predate 1900.
