Crimson carole
‘Crimson Carole’ is a red Japanese maple with very deeply cut foliage, often showing a visible contrast between the red (which darkens) and green veins. In spring it starts bright red, becomes purple to burgundy in summer, then finishes orange-red in autumn. Rather upright but supple habit, excellent in a pot as well as in a small garden.
Character & interest
Its key asset is the leaf shape: the lobes are deeply incised and finely cut, giving an almost “feathery” look. The colouring is rich and evolving, often with reddish petioles/shoots that enhance the effect. It’s an original red, more “cut-lace” than a broad-leaved red.
Colours
-
Spring : bright red / garnet foliage, sometimes with warmer nuances.
-
Summer : dark purple to burgundy (often very dark), frequently with contrasting green veins.
-
Autumn : orange-red to red-orange.
Habit & vigour
Upright habit, but with tips that can be supple (semi-arching depending on cultivation). Moderate vigour, steady growth.
Indicative size
Order of magnitude: around 3 to 4 m eventually in the ground (often less in a pot), with a spread of about 2 to 3 m depending on conditions and training.
Exposure
Gentle sun / bright partial shade. Colour holds well with light, but for impeccable foliage: avoid dry wind and scorching afternoon sun, especially in containers.
Origin & history
‘Crimson Carole’ is one of the Buchholz introductions (Flora Wonder collection) in the United States, by Buchholz & Buchholz Nursery (Gaston, Oregon). The original spelling generally includes the final “e” (Carole), but it is also found in trade as ‘Crimson Carol’.Carole), mais on le rencontre aussi en commerce sous ‘Crimson Carol’.
