The value of ‘Brilliantissimum’ is clearly spring-focused: the pink budbreak turns the tree into a focal point for several weeks. Then the tone becomes calmer (yellow-green), making it easy to pair with darker foliage (conifers, hedges, borders). Its overall size remains contained for a sycamore maple, with a dense, well-defined silhouette.

Compact habit with a dense crown, forming a well-proportioned small tree. Slow to moderate growth: it gains volume gradually, which makes it interesting for gardens where you want an accent tree without overly rapid development.

Observed orders of magnitude depending on sources and training:

• around 4 m tall at about 10 years, with a spread around 3 m,

• at maturity, it can reach about 5 to 8 m depending on conditions, with a crown that can become fairly broad,

• in windy or coastal settings, it is often used as a robust ornamental tree (growth moderated by exposure).

Exposure

Gentle sun / bright partial shade. Good light enhances coloration, but a position sheltered from harsh afternoon sun reduces the risk of scorch on the very pale young leaves.

Origin & history

‘Brilliantissimum’ is a British selection, described by J. Clark in 1905 (often considered older in collections). It is frequently cited as one of the most ornamental sycamore maples and has received an RHS horticultural distinction (Award of Garden Merit).
