Beni shigitatsu sawa

‘Beni shigitatsu sawa’ is a reticulated Japanese maple: the foliage shows a strong contrast between the leaf blade and the veins, with a very decorative pink/red, veined budbreak. In summer, the plant calms down (greener tones with the veining remaining visible), then autumn returns with orange to red nuances. Rather spreading habit, ideal as an accent plant.

Character & interest

This cultivar is sought after for its reticulated effect: a lively leaf, marbled and veined, particularly expressive in spring. Leaf margins can be wavy and finely irregular, which enhances the “textured” look of the foliage. A collector cultivar, especially interesting near a walkway, where the veining can be appreciated up close.

Colours

  • Spring : pink to rosy red foliage, with clearly visible veins (reticulated effect).

  • Summer : tends to green up (often with nuances, while the veining remains readable).

  • Autumn : orange to red (often marbled).

Habit & vigour

Spreading / broad habit, steady growth.

Indicative size

Order of magnitude: ~2.5 m after 10 years, and around ~3 m eventually depending on conditions (soil, climate, training).

Exposure

Best display in gentle sun / bright partial shade. A position sheltered from scorching sun and drying winds improves foliage hold and the finesse of the contrasts.
