Ariadne

‘Ariadne’ is a reticulated Japanese maple: in spring, the foliage emerges coppery orange to pink with a very pronounced network of green veins. Summer shifts to more purple/red tones, and autumn returns to orange through rosy reds, often still showing visible veining. A supple, slightly spreading habit, elegant in containers as well as in the ground.

Character & interest

This cultivar is appreciated for its reticulated foliage: a crisp contrast between the leaf blade and the vein network. The silhouette is naturally graceful, with slightly arching shoots.

Colours

  • Spring : copper / orange-pink, lightly marbled, with clearly visible green veins.

  • Summer : evolving towards purple to violet-red tones.

  • Autumn : orange-pink to red, sometimes with a return of the reticulated effect (veins becoming paler / yellowish).

Habit & vigour

Spreading to lightly arching habit, becoming broader with age. Moderate vigour, growth rather slow to steady.

Indicative size

Order of magnitude: 2–3 m in the medium term, potentially reaching 3–4 m depending on conditions (soil, climate, training).

Exposure

Best results in gentle sun or bright partial shade. Protection from scorching sun and drying winds helps keep the foliage cleaner in summer (as with many cultivars with strongly marked veining).

Origin & history

Cultivar introduced/distributed by the nursery PlantenTuin Esveld (Netherlands).
