9001
‘9001’ is a Japanese maple appreciated for its subtle spring colours (pink-red with green veining), its green summer foliage, then its spectacular autumn transformation into fiery red. A very notable feature: its fruiting (samaras), often red and particularly decorative from mid-summer onwards. A great cultivar for the garden as well as for a large pot, in gentle sun or bright partial shade.
Character & interest
‘9001’ combines a delicate spring display with a real autumn highlight. It is also sought after for its “bonus” interest: red samaras, which extend the plant’s appeal well before autumn colouring. It is ideal in a garden scene where you want colour at several times of the year without having permanent red foliage.
Colours
-
Spring : pink-red (often described as “rosy”) with green veins or a greener centre.
-
Summer : green to olive green.
-
Autumn : turning to bright red / fiery red, sometimes with a bronze-yellow to orange phase before reaching full intensity.
Habit & vigour
Upright habit at first, then more natural and balanced with age. Moderate vigour: it can form a beautiful small tree in the ground, while remaining manageable in a container if watering is kept up.
Indicative size
Observed orders of magnitude depending on sources and training:
-
often listed at around 4 to 5 m tall,
-
for about 3 to 4 m wide at maturity.
Exposure
Gentle sun / bright partial shade. A sheltered position away from drying winds helps keep the foliage clean.
