Leopoldii

‘Leopoldii’ is a particularly decorative sycamore maple thanks to its changing foliage: in spring, the young leaves open with a pink tone, then turn green with irregular yellow-to-cream blotches (sometimes paler in summer). It is a structural tree, much larger than a Japanese maple, ideal as a specimen in a spacious garden to fully enjoy the variegation, which is especially spectacular at budbreak.

Character & interest

‘Leopoldii’ creates a real spring show thanks to the pink budbreak, then keeps lasting interest through its “speckled” variegation, different from a margin-type variegation. Its naturally broad pyramidal habit makes it a fine subject for an avenue planting or a park, as long as it is given the space it needs.

Colours

  • Spring : young leaves pink (often very noticeable), then the variegation appears.

  • Summer : green speckled with yellow/cream; some leaves may shift to paler tones.

  • Autumn : generally yellow to golden yellow (intensity varies with climate).

Habit & vigour

A pyramidal tree (often dense) that broadens with age. Healthy, fairly vigorous growth for a sycamore maple, although variegation can slightly reduce vigor compared with the straight species.

Indicative size

Observed orders of magnitude depending on sources and training:

  • often 10 to 15 m tall at maturity in a garden,

  • can be taller (up to about 20 m) in favorable conditions,

  • typical spread 8 to 12 m (broad crown), depending on space and formative pruning.

Exposure

Gentle sun / bright partial shade. Good light enhances the variegation, but it’s best to avoid harsh afternoon sun on dry soil (risk of scorch on the pale areas).

Origin & history

‘Leopoldii’ is an old Belgian selection, introduced in 1864, and named in honor of King Leopold I. The name is also found as ‘Leopoldi’ in some catalogues (same cultivar; spelling varies).
