Trompenburg

‘Trompenburg’ is a highly sought-after Acer palmatum for its deeply cut foliage with narrow lobes whose edges curl and droop, creating a very graphic, domed effect. The color starts purple-red in spring, stays burgundy to dark purple in summer (often nicely intense), then flares up in autumn to orange-red through crimson. An excellent choice as a specimen or in a large container, bringing original texture and long-lasting contrast.

Character & interest

A signature cultivar for its “sculpted” foliage: the narrow, curled lobes create a unique silhouette, unlike more classic purple palmatum cultivars. It generally keeps good color intensity and delivers a very visible autumn display, especially against a dark green background.

Colours

  • Spring : purple-red to deep purple.

  • Summer : burgundy / dark purple, sometimes a bit greener depending on heat and exposure.

  • Autumn : orange-red to crimson (often very bright).

Habit & vigour

Upright at first, then more spreading, becoming dense over time. Good vigor: steady growth in cool, moist soil, establishing faster than some very dwarf cultivars.

Indicative size

Observed orders of magnitude depending on sources and training:

  • often around 2 to 3 m at about 10 years (variable),

  • in the long term, about 3 to 5 m tall, usually with a more moderate spread,

  • in a container, it remains more compact.

Exposure

Gentle sun / bright partial shade. A sheltered position protected from dry winds is recommended. Morning sun helps maintain good coloration; in hot climates, avoid harsh afternoon sun.

Origin & history

‘Trompenburg’ is a seedling selected by J.R.P. van Hoey Smith at Arboretum Trompenburg (Rotterdam, Netherlands), generally dated to 1965, then introduced commercially by Firma C. Esveld (Boskoop). It received a RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), confirming its garden value.
