Purple thunder

‘Purple Thunder’ is an Acer shirasawanum with a very distinctive character: its large purple leaves have lobes that curve downward, creating a unique, almost “sculptural” foliage silhouette. The color is especially intense on new growth, stays burgundy through summer, then finishes in a blazing red in autumn. An excellent choice to add contrast and an original texture in the garden or in a large container.

Character & interest

This cultivar stands out for two key strengths: a long-lasting dark color and an unusual leaf shape (downturned lobes), clearly visible even from a distance. The effect can sometimes recall certain purple maples with “curled” leaves, while still keeping a “full moon” expression (broad leaves, strong presence). Very effective against a light background (gravel, walls) or, conversely, in front of evergreens.

Colours

  • Spring : deep purple (often very intense).

  • Summer : burgundy / purple-bronze, with new growth that can appear brighter.

  • Autumn : bright red (often very luminous).

Habit & vigour

Rather upright habit, with a crown that becomes denser over time. Moderate vigor, with steady growth if the soil stays cool and moist in summer.

Indicative size

Observed orders of magnitude depending on sources and training:

  • often around 2.5 m tall at about 10 years,

  • with a spread commonly around 1.2 to 2 m at that age,

  • some cultivation references suggest it may reach 3.5 to 4.5 m tall at 10 years in very favorable conditions (to be considered a maximum).

Exposure

Gentle sun / bright partial shade. To preserve the quality of the purple coloration and avoid leaf scorch, choose a sheltered position protected from dry winds and from harsh afternoon sun (especially in containers).

Origin & history

‘Purple Thunder’ is presented as a recent selection made by the American nurseryman Talon Buchholz.
