Green lace

‘Green Lace’ is a green dissectum-type Japanese maple, valued for its very finely cut foliage and its naturally cascading, dome-shaped habit. From spring to late summer, it stays a fresh green to emerald green, then in autumn it turns a luminous golden yellow (rarer among dissectums, which are more often red/orange). Ideal in a pot or in a small garden, to bring lightness and movement.

Character & interest

‘Green Lace’ is a texture cultivar: its finely cut lobes create a light, almost airy look that instantly softens a garden scene. It is also very interesting for its often yellow autumn colour, which stands out from the classic reds. It is an excellent variety to create contrast next to a purple dissectum.

Colours

  • Spring : light green (sometimes “creamy green” at budbreak).

  • Summer : fresh green to emerald green.

  • Autumn : golden yellow to deep yellow (sometimes nuanced depending on conditions).

Habit & vigour

Low, spreading and weeping habit, forming a “mushroom” dome with arching branches. Vigour is generally moderate: the plant spreads nicely without becoming invasive, especially in a pot.

Indicative size

Observed orders of magnitude depending on sources and training:

  • often around 1.5 m tall at about 10 years (with a good spread),

  • other references indicate rather 2 to 3 m tall and wide in the long term (depending on training, graft, soil and climate).

Exposure

Bright partial shade or gentle sun. A sheltered position from drying winds limits leaf scorch on the fine foliage in summer.

Origin & history

‘Green Lace’ is generally given as an introduction linked to the Fratelli Gilardelli nursery (Italy, Milan / Brianza area).
