Shirazz
‘Shirazz’ is a variegated Japanese maple with a very “couture” look: in spring, the foliage emerges purple to red, clearly edged in bright pink; in summer, it shifts towards green/bronze tones with pink margins (sometimes cream/pink depending on exposure), then finishes in autumn with orange-red to scarlet-red shades. The leaves, often crinkled and irregular, add a unique texture. Superb in a pot and in a sheltered spot in the garden.
Character & interest
‘Shirazz’ is a cultivar of contrast and texture: the pink variegation, very visible at budbreak, is enhanced by leaves that are frequently distorted / crinkled, sometimes “sickle-shaped”, which amplifies the material-like effect. It is a high-end variety, ideal for creating a very graphic focal point—especially when placed near a path or a terrace.
Colours
-
Spring : purple-red / bright red with a pink margin (sometimes fuchsia pink in gentle full sun).
-
Summer : green to bronze-green foliage, often with pink edges (sometimes cream/pink depending on light and new flushes).
-
Autumn : orange-red to scarlet red.
Habit & vigour
Initially upright, then the branches may arch with age, creating a very elegant silhouette. Slow to moderate growth.
Indicative size
Observed orders of magnitude depending on sources and training:
-
about 1.5 m at around 10 years is a commonly quoted figure,
-
often listed at around 2–3 m at maturity in many catalogues,
-
some references indicate that with time and good conditions, it can become larger (higher figures possible depending on age and training).
Exposure
Bright partial shade is recommended, or gentle (morning) sun in a temperate climate. A sheltered position (dry winds, scorching sun) is important to preserve the finesse of the pink margins and to limit foliage drying.
Origin & history
‘Shirazz’ is a selection of New Zealand origin: it was discovered / introduced by Duncan & Davies Nursery (New Zealand), then distributed internationally.
Regarding naming, several sources indicate that the plant first circulated under the cultivar name ‘Gwen’s Rose Delight’, and that Shirazz later became the commercial name (brand / trade name) used to sell the same cultivar.
Finally, it is often presented as a sport related to the cultivar ‘Geisha’ (hence its aesthetic proximity to the variegated “Geisha” types), while keeping its own personality: frequently crinkled/irregular foliage and very expressive pink variegation.
