Shigi no hoshi
‘Shigi no hoshi’ is a compact, highly decorative Japanese maple, sought after for its reticulated foliage: in spring, the young leaves are very pale, crossed by dark green veins that create an elegant marbled pattern. In summer, the foliage becomes greener, then the tree finishes with a brilliant yellow in autumn. A collector cultivar for pots, terraces and small gardens, with a true “collection” look.
Character & interest
‘Shigi no hoshi’ stands out for a rare visual effect in Acer palmatum: a very readable reticulation (marbled / veined look), especially on the spring flush. It is a detail cultivar, best enjoyed up close, and it immediately adds a sophisticated touch to a composition (pot, woodland scene, maple collection).
Colours
-
Spring : very pale foliage (whitish / marbled) with strongly contrasting dark green veins.
-
Summer : foliage becomes greener, and the contrast is more subtle.
-
Autumn : bright yellow to luminous yellow.
Habit & vigour
Upright habit while remaining compact, with branching that can look fine and supple. Moderate vigour (a rather “small format” cultivar over time), very well suited to container growing.
Indicative size
Observed orders of magnitude depending on sources and training:
-
about 1.5 m at around 10 years is a commonly quoted figure,
-
some descriptions give 1.2 to 1.8 m at 10 years,
-
in very good conditions and with time, it can move towards ~2 m (or more depending on training), while still classed as a “compact” palmatum.
Exposure
Bright partial shade or gentle (morning) sun, ideally sheltered from drying winds. As with many pale/contrasting foliages, excessive heat can reduce visual crispness: a protected position and a free-draining but cool soil in summer improve performance.
