Sawa chidori
‘Sawa chidori’ is a highly sought-after reticulated Japanese maple for its spring foliage: young leaves are cream to pale pink, crossed by very graphic dark green veins (a “ghost” effect). In summer, the plant gradually turns greener, often keeping pale veins. In autumn, the colouring shifts to orange tones that can reach vivid red. A collector cultivar, superb in a container and in a sheltered position.
Character & interest
‘Sawa chidori’ belongs to the “reticulated” maples: the contrast between a pale leaf blade and a darker network of veins creates a very crisp look, especially at budbreak. The effect is at its peak in spring, then the leaf gains green through the season, which prolongs interest without becoming monotonous.
Colours
-
Spring : cream / pale pink leaves (sometimes with peach nuances), with very marked dark green veins.
-
Summer : foliage becomes greener, often with visible pale/white veins.
-
Autumn : orange to orange-red, potentially reaching vivid red depending on conditions.
Habit & vigour
Upright and rather bushy habit. Moderate to good vigour (steady growth if the soil stays cool).
Indicative size
Order of magnitude: around 2.5 m at about 10 years, with a potential of about 3 to 4 m in the long run, and a width often between 2 and 3 m (variable with soil, climate and training).
Exposure
Bright partial shade recommended. Pale foliage appreciates protection from scorching sun (especially in the afternoon) and dry wind, particularly in containers.
Origin & history
The sources consulted converge on a Japanese introduction (1988). It is described as a chance seedling of amoenum type, found in Japan (Shizuoka Prefecture) and then introduced into cultivation around that time.
