Ryoku ryu
‘Ryoku ryu’ is a semi-dwarf Japanese maple with an upright habit, appreciated for its small, fine and unusual foliage (often described as irregular or slightly “sickle-shaped”). In spring, the young leaves emerge green with pinkish nuances (often on the edges), then turn green in summer. In autumn, it colours orange (sometimes tending towards orange-red). A delicate, compact cultivar, ideal in a container and for bonsai.
Character & interest
‘Ryoku ryu’ stands out above all for its texture: the leaves are small and give a very “fine” impression, with a light, refined look. The plant stays compact, which makes it easy to place on a terrace or in a small garden, and explains its appeal for bonsai cultivation.
Colours
-
Spring : green, often with a pinkish nuance (sometimes mainly on the margins).
-
Summer : green.
-
Autumn : yellow-orange to orange, sometimes orange-red.
Habit & vigour
Upright habit, rather narrow and compact. Moderate vigour (semi-dwarf), steady growth without excess.
Indicative size
Order of magnitude: about 1 to 1.5 m at 10 years depending on conditions, and often 1.5 to 2.5 m ultimately in garden cultivation (variable with soil, climate, graft and training). In a pot, growth remains more contained.
Exposure
Bright partial shade or gentle sun. Good light enhances autumn colour, but protection from scorching sun and drying wind improves foliage quality, especially in a container.
