Kiyohime
‘Kiyohime’ is a dwarf, very dense Japanese maple, appreciated for its spreading habit (often wider than tall) and its small 5-lobed leaves. In spring, it leafs out pale green with an orange to reddish margin, then becomes a rich green in summer. In autumn, it colours yellow-orange. An excellent choice for containers and a very interesting base for bonsai training.
Character & interest
‘Kiyohime’ is sought after for its compact, very branched structure: it naturally forms a dense mass with short internodes. Its silhouette often tends to spread more than it grows upward, making it perfect for small spaces and low compositions.
Colours
-
Spring : pale green leaves with an orange/reddish edging.
-
Summer : rich green.
-
Autumn : yellow-orange (sometimes warmer depending on conditions).
Habit & vigour
Dense, spreading habit; dwarf shrub. Good vigour for a dwarf (it branches a lot), while remaining easy to keep compact.
Indicative size
As a guide: around 1 to 2 m tall, with a spread often equal to or greater (often much wider if allowed to spread). Values vary greatly depending on cultivation, in-ground vs container, and training.
Exposure
Gentle sun / bright partial shade. Good light improves density, but protection from scorching sun and drying wind helps keep the foliage tidy, especially in a container.
