Kinky krinkle

Character & interest

The main appeal is the texture: the leaves look wrinkled / embossed, sometimes slightly curled, giving a very lively look—without any “diseased” impression. The habit is rather upright, which sets it apart from crinkled-leaf maples that are more “ball-shaped”. The plant is often noted for its beautiful contrast between the very luminous spring green and the orange-red autumn display.

Order of magnitude: around 1.5 m at about 10 years in some references, with a potential often around 2.5 to 4 m in the long run depending on conditions. Higher estimates exist, but actual size depends strongly on climate, soil, the graft and training.

Exposure

Bright partial shade to gentle sun. Several sellers indicate good performance in full light if the soil remains well-drained and cool (avoid drought and drying wind), especially in a pot.

‘Kinky Krinkle’ is an American selection attributed to Talon Buchholz (Buchholz & Buchholz Nursery, Oregon). It also circulates under the name ‘Krazy Krinkle’, the two generally being considered synonyms.
