Earthfire

‘Earthfire’ is a Japanese maple with finely cut foliage that stands out for a very visible reticulated effect on young growth (contrasting green veins). In spring, the colour is a luminous pink-red, then it shifts towards bronze / red-green tones in summer, and finishes in scarlet red in autumn. A compact, graphic cultivar, particularly well suited to container growing.

Character & interest

‘Earthfire’ is a cultivar apart: it combines the finesse of very deeply cut foliage with a contrasting vein pattern (often strongly marked on young shoots). Another feature often observed: leaves on older wood may resemble a dissectum, while new growth appears more finely cut and expressive. Altogether, it makes a highly decorative maple from spring to autumn, without relying solely on colour.

Colours

  • Spring : very luminous pink-red foliage, with greenish veins clearly highlighted (reticulated effect).

  • Summer : red-green tones shifting to bronze / reddish brown, often deeper.

  • Autumn : bright red to scarlet red, usually very spectacular.

Habit & vigour

Rather low and spreading habit, with a supple silhouette (a “cushion” / low groundcover effect depending on training). Moderate vigour: steady growth, well suited to limited spaces.

Indicative size

Order of magnitude: often around 2 m at 10 years depending on conditions, with a spread frequently between 1.5 and 2 m (and potentially broader with age in the ground).

Exposure

Bright partial shade recommended, or gentle sun (morning). Protection from scorching sun (afternoon) and dry wind helps keep the foliage clean, especially in a container. Well-drained soil recommended.
