Como

Character & interest

‘Como’ is sought after for its reticulated pattern (green veins standing out against a pale background), which catches the eye from far away and up close. It’s typically a maple to showcase: near a walkway, against a dark background, or in a container at eye level. Like many pale variegates, it looks best when sheltered (dry wind and strong sun = less crisp, more delicate foliage).

Colours

• Spring : pink / cream foliage with a strong contrast of green veins (reticulated effect).

• Summer : tends to partially green up, with a mix of soft green + cream; new growth may flush pinkish / orange.

• Autumn : end of season often salmon pink to apricot, sometimes with warmer nuances depending on exposure.

Habit & vigour

Rather upright and flared habit. Moderate vigour: steady growth, but not a “fast runner” cultivar.

Indicative size

Typical range: around 2 to 3 m ultimately, often ~2.5 m at around 10 years in good conditions, with a spread generally 1.5 to 2.5 m depending on training and position.

Exposure

Bright partial shade recommended. Accepts gentle sun (morning), but avoid scorching full sun (especially afternoon) and dry wind, which mark pale leaves more quickly.

‘Como’ (often sold as ‘Reticulatum Como’) is an Australian cultivar. It is given as selected and introduced by Chandler’s Nursery / Como Nurseries, in The Basin (Melbourne region, Victoria).
