Beni tsukasa
‘Beni tsukasa’ offers one of the most refined spring palettes: young leaves in peach–apricot tones, sometimes salmon/pink, then turning green in summer. Autumn returns with orange to red shades. Softly upright habit, elegant silhouette—very well suited as an accent specimen or in a large container.
Character & interest
A cultivar appreciated for its gradual, nuanced colour progression: spring is clearly the highlight season, with warm, luminous tones that are rarely matched. The foliage remains delicate, and the branching keeps a supple, natural look.
Colours
-
Spring : peach / apricot / rosy yellow, often with salmon nuances and small reddish touches on young shoots.
-
Summer : green foliage (sometimes with slightly lighter veining or fine nuances).
-
Autumn : orange, then red (often orange-red).
Habit & vigour
Upright habit, supple branching, naturally balanced silhouette. Steady vigour.
Indicative size
Order of magnitude: 2.5 to 5 m tall at maturity depending on conditions, with around 2 to 3 m spread (variable according to soil, climate and training).
Exposure
Gentle sun / bright partial shade. Good light enhances the spring colours; protection from scorching sun and dry winds improves foliage hold, especially in a pot.
Origin & history
Selection originating from the Tsukasa nursery (Japan).
The cultivar has received an Award of Garden Merit (RHS), confirming its garden performance.
