Aoyagi

‘Aoyagi’ is a Japanese maple appreciated for its light green shoots (a more marked tone in the cold season) and its chartreuse spring foliage, becoming greener in summer. Autumn usually finishes as a very bright golden yellow. Upright habit, then broader with age: an elegant cultivar, also interesting in winter.

Character & interest

The main appeal of ‘Aoyagi’ is twofold: spring brightness (young chartreuse leaves) and light green stems that add real interest in winter, in the spirit of “coral bark” types but in a green version. The foliage remains fine and decorative, without excess, with a clean silhouette.

Colours

  • Spring : chartreuse / yellow-green, very bright.

  • Summer : green (more subdued).

  • Autumn : golden yellow (often clear and strong).

  • Winter : light green / “pea green” shoots, colour more readable on young wood.

Habit & vigour

Upright habit, then broad and flared with age. Regular vigour.

Indicative size

Order of magnitude: 3–4 m in the medium term, potentially reaching 6–8 m over time in favourable conditions (varies with soil, climate and training).

Exposure

Best results in gentle sun or bright partial shade. Good light helps show the shoots and strengthens the intensity of the autumn yellow; in hot situations, avoid harsh full afternoon sun.

Origin & history

Japanese cultivar. The name 青柳 (Aoyagi) means “green willow” (in the sense of a willow greening again in spring).
