Anne Irene
‘Anne Irene’ is a very bright Japanese maple, valued for its golden-yellow spring foliage, often highlighted by a fine red edging on the young leaves. In summer, the colour shifts to yellow-green / chartreuse green, then autumn finishes in bright orange to red. Compact, upright habit, easy to integrate in a container or in the garden.
Character & interest
A “golden” cultivar with an interesting detail: finely toothed lobes that give a more textured look than many classic yellow cultivars. Spring is the most spectacular season, but the plant keeps a bright presence throughout the year.
Colours
-
Spring : golden yellow; young leaves sometimes edged with red (a fringed red outline that fades later).
-
Summer : yellow-green / chartreuse, softer.
-
Autumn : orange then red (sometimes deep red depending on conditions).
-
Bois : young shoots may show dark red tones.
Habit & vigour
Bushy, upright and dense habit. Moderate vigour.
Indicative size
Order of magnitude: about 2 to 3 m in the medium term (depending on climate, soil and training), with a spread often slightly smaller.
Exposure
Best results in gentle sun / bright partial shade. Like many yellow-leaved cultivars, it stays more consistent when sheltered from scorching sun and drying winds.
Origin & history
‘Anne-Irene’ is described as a sport selected from ‘Summer Gold’, spotted at Kwekerij van Son & Koot (Netherlands) and introduced by Dick van der Maat.
