Kasagi yama

‘Kasagi Yama’ is a Japanese maple with veined / marbled foliage that changes markedly through the seasons. In spring, new leaves often show a brick-pink / rosy red tone with green veins (sometimes a green–cream–pink marbled effect). Summer turns more bronze or brown-green, then autumn returns to raspberry red to red shades, often still visibly veined. Upright habit, gradually opening out with age.

Character & interest

A sought-after “collector” cultivar: refined leaf texture (wavy margins, irregular serration) and reticulated colouring that adds real depth. The way it evolves over the season is part of its charm.

Colours

  • Spring : rosy red / brick pink, veined with green, sometimes marbled (green–cream–pink).

  • Summer : bronze red to brown-green, sometimes with pinker new flushes.

  • Autumn : raspberry red to red, often with a marbled effect and visible veins.

Habit & vigour

Upright habit that will broaden with age. Steady, regular vigour.

Indicative size

Common order of magnitude: around 2 m at 10–15 years, then a small tree that can reach about 3–5 m depending on soil, climate and training.

Exposure

Best display in gentle sun or bright partial shade. Veined/marbled foliage gains finesse when the tree is sheltered from scorching sun and drying winds.

Origin & history

A cultivar of Japanese origin, marketed in Japan under the name 笠置山 (Kasagiyama). The name refers to Mount Kasagi (Kasagiyama) in Kasagi (Kyōto), a well-known, listed site for its rocky scenery and maples.
