Character & interest

This cultivar is appreciated for a very clear “spring effect”: pinkish-white to coral young foliage that immediately catches the eye. The contrast is often enhanced by a quick shift toward softer tones, then by later flushes that can reintroduce coral during the season.

Colours

  • Spring : pinkish-white → coral at budbreak, then shifting to light green by mid-spring.

  • Summer : greener foliage, sometimes speckled/nuanced depending on conditions; possible new flushes in coral again.

  • Autumn : orange to red.

Habit & vigour

Upright habit. Rather slow to moderate growth, with a compact, easy-to-place form.

Indicative size

1.8 to 2.4 m tall at around 10 years (variable with training and conditions).

Exposure

To preserve the light foliage: gentle sun or bright partial shade. In hot situations, protection from afternoon sun improves foliage quality.

Origin & history

‘Coral Pink’ was spotted/selected by Jelena de Broder (Arboretum Kalmthout, Belgium) and introduced by Cor Van Gelderen (Esveld).
