Will’s devine
A highly graphic reticulated Japanese maple: a light leaf blade (mint/cream to lavender depending on the year) crossed by purple to deep purple veins. Spring is the cultivar’s standout season, then the plant shifts toward softer tones in summer. Autumn colours turn golden yellow to bright orange.
Character & interest
‘Will’s Devine’ belongs to the reticulated-leaf maples: the vein/blade contrast is the key feature. Its appeal is twofold: very bright spring foliage and dark venation that remains readable, giving a true “collector” look without being over the top. The foliage is deeply cut, adding a fine, airy texture.
Colours
-
Spring : year-to-year variation is possible:
-
either a mint margin that shifts toward a brighter cream centre,
-
or a more lavender tone with a warmer yellow-mint base.
In all cases, purple/deep purple veins strongly structure the leaf.
-
-
Summer : calmer tones, often partially greening depending on exposure and vigour while keeping visible venation; new flushes are often pink and contrast well against the rest of the foliage.
-
Autumn : golden yellow to bright orange.
Habit & vigour
Semi-arching habit with a clean, readable silhouette. Moderate vigour.
Indicative size
around 3 m at roughly 10 years in good conditions, then continuing toward a small tree (depending on soil, climate and training).
Exposure
To maximise the spring display: morning sun with protection from hot afternoon sun. Light that is too strong shortens the “pale” effect and marks the foliage more quickly.
Origin & history
Reticulated selection attributed to Will Devine.
